MOVING TIPS

PACK WITH EASE

Helpful Moving Tips From Lithgow Removals

HOW TO BEGIN MOVING

The first step in any move is to begin packing your items. To start, you’ll want to gather boxes, packing tape and something to clearly label each box with. You may also want to consider any cushioning or packing materials that you will need to ensure all of your items are protected properly.

Start Packing

As you start to pack, it is helpful to gather items by room or category, i.e. cleaning supplies or bedroom items. When filling the boxes, put heavier belonging on the bottom and lighter ones on the top. It is also helpful to just use smaller, heavy-duty boxes for heavy items so the boxes don’t become overloaded.

Cushioning

When your boxes are filled roughly 5cm from the top, you should not add any more items so that you can add a cushioning layer to protect your items during the move. We recommend utilising crushed butcher paper instead of newspapers since the newspaper can transfer black ink onto your goods that may be hard to remove.

Priority Items

When you arrive at your new home, there are going to be items that you want to access immediately. This could include phone chargers, personal electronics, important documents, medication or other things you use on a daily basis. Pack these items together in a marked priority box for us to load in the truck or you can keep them with you in your vehicle on moving day.

Moving Plants

If you have any house plants that you are bringing with you, there are a few things to be mindful of. Depending on what your plants are in, you will want to take extra precautions since terracotta and concrete pots can easily break. You should also not water your plant two days before the move to reduce the risk of leaks.

PREPARE FOR THE REMOVALISTS

There are many items in your home that require attention before we arrive, so they must be prepared for the removalist team. We’ve gathered some additional helpful tips to ensure that you are completely ready on the day of your move. Read on to find out more.

Large Appliances

Fridges, freezers and washing machines should be completely cleaned out and drained, if necessary, at least 12 hours before the move begins.

Flat-Pack Furniture

These types of items are more susceptible to breakage or damage during moves. We recommend dismantling this furniture before moving.

Outdoor Items

If you have patio furniture or dog kennels, they should be completely cleaned before moving them. Trampolines and swing sets should be dismantled.

Beds and Gym Equipment

We recommend dismantling beds and gym equipment before a move as they are bulky and take up extra space in moving vehicles. Keep all bolts and screws together.

Dangerous Goods

Removalists cannot transport any dangerous goods, including:
  • Flammables
  • Explosives, including guns and gun powder
  • Poisons
  • Corrosives
  • Gas bottles
  • Fuel and fuel-based products, including mowers and garden equipment

Electronics

You should disconnect all electronics and keeps the cables together to make it easier to set them up again. Remotes, computers and personal electronics should be in your priority boxes.

Shed Items

Any lose items in your shed need to be packed up prior to the removalists arriving and all cabinets or other large items need to be cleaned for the move.
